ĐTC bổ nhiệm Cha Nguyễn Thái Thành, tân Giám Mục Phụ Tá Orange, Hoa Kỳ
VATICAN. Hôm 6-10-2017, ĐTC đã bổ nhiệm Cha Nguyễn Thái Thành làm tân GM Phụ tá giáo phận Orange, bang California, nơi có đông người Việt Nam nhất nước Mỹ. Ngài là Giám Mục người Việt thứ hai tại Mỹ sau Đức Cha Đaminh Mai Thanh Lương.
Đức Giáo Hoàng Phanxicô đã bổ nhiệm Cha Nguyễn Thái Thành làm Giám Mục Phụ Tá của Giáo phận Orange. Cha Thành, 64 tuổi, hiện đang là chánh xứ giáo xứ Thánh Giuse ở Jacksonville - giáo xứ lớn nhất trong giáo phận St. Augustine với khoảng 4.000 gia đình.
Tin này được Vatican loan báo ngày 6 tháng 10và cùng ngày cũng được Msgr. Walter Erbi, Tham mưu của Tòa Khâm sứ ở Hoa Kỳ tại Washington, D.C, công bố; và sáng nay tại Tòa Giám Mục giáo phận Orange cũng cuộc họp báo để công bố tin này và VietCatholic đã được mời tham dự.
Khi được tin này, tân giám mục được bổ nhiệm Cha Thành nói: "Giờ đây, thực tế đang bắt đầu, tôi cần bắt đầu quá trình buông bỏ và để cho Chúa làm việc. Đúng vậy, phải rời bỏ những nơi thân thương, các bộ mặt quen thuộc, Đức Cha Estévez, linh mục đòan của giáo phận, giáo dân và nhân viên của giáo xứ Thánh Giuse và của giáo xứ Chúa Kitô Vua, những người đóng vai trò quan trọng trong chức vụ linh mục của tôi trong hơn 20 năm qua".
Đức Giám Mục Felipe Estévez thuộc Giáo Phận St Augustine cho biết Ngài đã biết được việc bổ nhiệm Cha Thành làm Giám mục vào ngày 27 tháng 9 vừa qua, ngày mà Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô khởi động chiến dịch kéo dài hai năm, "Chia sẻ Hành trình". Sáng kiến toàn cầu muốn thúc giục người Công Giáo hiểu biết và tìm hiểu những người tị nạn và người di cư đã trốn khỏi xứ sở của mình vì đói nghèo, bạo lực, khủng bố và chiến tranh. Đức cha Estévez nói: "Cha Thành biết rõ hoàn cảnh của người tị nạn, và Cha hiểu hành trình tìm kiếm ngôi nhà an toàn và khả năng hỗ trợ cho gia đình họ. Cha Thành là món quà đích thật khi phục vụ cho những người có nền văn hoá đa dạng".
Đức cha Estévez nhận định thêm: "Cha Thành không chỉ thúc đẩy sự hiệp nhất trong giáo xứ mà còn thúc đẩy ơn gọi linh mục và đời sống tu trì hơn bất cứ giáo xứ nào trong giáo phận".
Cùng lúc, sáng nay lúc 10:30 tại Tòa Giám Mục GP Orange, sau khi được GM Kevin Vann giới thiệu ngài là Tân GM phụ tá GP Orange, ĐC Thành phát biểu như sau: "Tôi cảm ơn Thiên Chúa đã ban cho tôi món quà sự sống, bảo vệ tôi trong hành trình đức tin của tôi, đặc biệt là từ Việt Nam đến Philippines với Hoa Kỳ, tặng tôi món quà chức Linh mục và dẫn tôi đến với anh chị em, trong sứ vụ là Giám mục phụ tá mới của qúi vị”.'
Ngài nói tiếp: "Tôi cảm ơn Chúa vì món quà chức Linh mục. Tôi yêu đời sống và mục vụ giáo xứ. Tôi đã tìm ở đó cả thách thức cùng bổ ích. Đó là một trách nhiệm tuyệt vời để trở nên giống Chúa Kitô đối với những người được ủy thác cho tôi như là người lãnh đạo tinh thần của họ."
Sau khi cám ơn Thiên Chúa, vị tân giám mục nói tiếp: "Tôi cảm ơn cha mẹ đã cho tôi cuộc sống và truyền đạt đức tin Công giáo cho tôi. Khi tôi còn trẻ, cha mẹ tôi chắc chắn rằng tôi được ơn gọi trở thành linh mục. Họ rất vui khi dự lễ tấn phong linh mục của tôi. Bây giờ thì cha mẹ tôi có thể nghỉ ngơi an bình trong Chúa."
Cha Thành sinh ra ở Nha Trang, Việt Nam, năm 1953, là con thứ hai của một gia đình có 11 người con. Năm 13 tuổi, ngài vào Dòng Tu viện Thánh Giuse ở Nha Trang và đã khấn lần đầu tiên vào năm 1974.
Năm 1979, cha Thanh và gia đình của Ngài trốn thoát khỏi Việt Nam sau chiến tranh. Họ chạy trốn bằng thuyền, và sau 18 ngày trên biển, họ tới được Philippines. Cha Thành đã sống trong trại tị nạn 10 tháng trước khi chuyển đến Hoa Kỳ vào năm 1980.

Sau khi thụ phong linh mục, cha làm phó xứ “Thánh Tôma Tông Đồ” ở Smyrna, Georgia (1991-1994), phó xứ Thánh Anna ở Marietta, Georgia (1994-1996) và “Chúa Kitô Vua” ở Jacksonville, Florida (1996-1999).
Năm 1999, Ngài gia nhập giáo phận Saint-Augustine, bang Florida, Cha tiếp tục làm cha phó xứ Chúa Kitô Vua ở Jacksonville (1999-2001), sau đó làm cha sở cùng giáo xứ này (2001-2014). Từ năm 2014, cha làm cha sở giáo xứ Thánh Giuse cũng tại thành phố Jacksonville, và Ngài cũng là thành viên Hội đồng tư vấn và Hội đồng linh mục của giáo phận Saint-Augustine.
Giáo xứ giáo xứ Thánh Giuse tại thành phố Jacksonville, là một giáo xứ lớn nhất giáo phận với 4.000 gia đình, giáo xứ này không có thánh lễ tiếng Việt, nhưng có lễ bằng tiếng Mỹ, Mễ và Bồ đào nha.
Là giám mục phụ tá tại GP Orange, Tân GM Thành sẽ trợ giúp Giám mục Kevin Vann cùng với giám mục phụ tá khác là Timothy Freyer. Ngài sẽ lãnh đạo cộng đồng người Việt lớn của giáo phận.
Lịch sử của Giáo phận Orange bắt đầu từ năm 1776 với sự thành lập Mission San Juan Capistrano. Ngày nay, giáo phận Orange thuộc miền Nam California, dưới sự lãnh đạo của Giám mục Kevin Vann, là giáo phận lớn thứ 10 và là một trong những thành phố phát triển nhanh nhất với 1.3 triệu người Công Giáo. Giáo phận đa văn hóa này hiện có 62 giáo xứ.

Bishops Must Set an Example through Sanctity of Life

VATICAN CITY, 15 SEP 2011 (VIS) - Today in Castelgandolfo the Holy Father received a group of newly consecrated bishops who are currently participating in a meeting organised by the Congregation for Bishops. For the last ten years the congregation has been inviting new bishops to make a pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Peter in order to reflect on the main responsibilities of episcopal ministry.
"You are invited", the Pope told the group "to renew your profession of faith and your trusting adherence to Jesus Christ over the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, showing the same impulse of love as Peter himself and strengthening your ties of communion with his Successor and with your brother bishops".
In this context Benedict XVI explained that "the bishop ... is not alone, he is part of that 'corpus episcoporum' which, joining us to Christ, has been handed down from the Apostles' time to our own". He encouraged the prelates to live every day in episcopal fraternity, working in communion with the Pope and their brother bishops, while "seeking to cultivate friendship with them and with your priests".
The Holy Father then turned his attention to the importance of bishops accepting "the charisms which the Spirit arouses for the edification of the Church", especially among the faithful. "Bishops have the task of watching and working to ensure that the baptised increase in grace, in accordance with the charisms the Holy Spirit causes to arise in their hearts and communities", he said.
"The fundamental gift you are called to cherish in the faithful entrusted to your pastoral care is that of divine filiation; in other words, the fact that everyone participates in Trinitarian communion. Baptism, which makes men and women 'children in the Son' and members of the Church, is the root and source of all other charismatic gifts. Through your ministry of sanctification, you educate the faithful to participate with increasing intensity in the priestly, prophetic and regal office of Christ, helping them to build the Church, actively and responsibly, according to the gifts they have received from God.
"We must", the Pope added, "always bear in mind the fact that the gifts of the Spirit - be they extraordinary or simple and humble - are always given freely for the edification of all. The bishop, as a visible sign of the unity of his particular Church, has the duty of unifying and harmonising the charismatic diversity of ecclesial unity, favouring reciprocity between the hierarchical and the baptismal priesthood".
The Holy Father invited bishops "to accept charisms gratefully, for the sanctification of the Church and the vitality of the apostolate. This acceptance and this gratitude ... are inseparable from discernment, which is part of the bishop's mission. Vatican Council II said as much when it gave pastoral ministry the task of judging the genuineness of charisms and their proper use, not extinguishing the Spirit but testing and retaining what is good. Therefore, it must always be clear that no charism can dispense from deferring and submitting to the pastors of the Church".
Episcopal ministry "requires the bishop to nourish his own spiritual life with care" because, as the Apostolic Exhortation "Pastores gregis" says, "he becomes a 'father' precisely because he is fully a 'son' of the Church. ... These two inseparable aspects call him to grow as son and as pastor as he follows Christ, in order that his personal sanctity may be an expression of the objective sanctity he received through episcopal consecration".
The Holy Father concluded: "The sanctity of your lives and your pastoral charity will be an example and support to your priests, ... who are also called to build the community with their gifts, charisms and the witness of their lives, so that the choral communion of the Church may bear witness to Jesus Christ, that the world may believe".

VIETNAMESE REFUGEE NAMED MELBOURNE AUXILIARY

MELBOURNE, Australia, MAY 20, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI named Conventual Franciscan Father Vincent Long Van Nguyen as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Australia.
Vincent Long Van Nguyen is a native of Dong Nai, Saigon, Vietnam. In 1980, he and his family fled the country in a refugee boat destined for Australia.
In 1983, Nguyen became a Conventual Franciscan friar and studied for the priesthood in Melbourne. He was ordained in 1989, and was then sent to Rome for further studies. He received a licentiate in Christology and Spirituality from the Pontifical Faculty of St. Bonaventure.
He was elected superior of the Order of Friars Minor Conventuals in Australia in 2005, and since 2008, he has been in Rome serving as assistant-general, responsible for the Asia-Oceania section of order.
Archbishop Denis Hart of Melbourne called the appointment "historic": "He escaped from Vietnam by boat as a young man, came to Melbourne, joined the Conventual Franciscans, and has already given distinguished service as a pastor in Springvale, as a leader in his order and has made a generous and gifted contribution to the Church."
Bishop-designate Nguyen will be ordained bishop June 23 in Melbourne's St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet Resigned
VATICAN CITY, 13 MAY 2010 (VIS) - The Holy Father:
- Accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Hanoi, Vietnam, presented by Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet, in accordance with canon 401 para. 2 of the Code of Canon Law. He is succeeded by Coadjutor Archbishop Pierre Nguyen Van Nhon.
- Appointed Fr. Paul Nguyen Thai Hop O.P., professor of ethics and Church social doctrine at the Dominican study centre and various other religious institutes, and professor at the Ho Chi Minh Ville State University, as bishop of Vinh (area 30,594, population 6,090,000, Catholics 486,234, priests 166, religious 610), Vietnam. The bishop-elect was born in Lang Anh, Vietnam in 1945 and ordained a priest in 1972. He succeeds Bishop Paul-Marie Cao Dinh Thuyen M.S.C., whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese the Holy Father accepted, upon having reached the age limit.

Hanoi Archbishop seeks to calm fears
In a bid to ease concerns expressed by local Catholics, Hanoi Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet has issued a statement welcoming the appointment of his new coadjutor Bishop Peter Nguyen Van Nhon.

POPE BENEDICT XVI APPOINTS TWO AUXILIARY BISHOPS FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF TORONTO
TORONTO (6 November 2009) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has appointed Father Vincent Nguyen of the Archdiocese of Toronto and Father William McGrattan of the Diocese of London as Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese of Toronto.
His Grace, Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, responded to the news with the following statement:
"We thank the Holy Father for blessing us with two new shepherds to assist the people of the Archdiocese of Toronto as we grow together in faith. I have worked closely with both Father Nguyen and Father McGrattan; as bishops, they will bring a love of the church and an abundance of gifts to their new roles. I look forward to collaborating extensively with them in the days ahead."
Bishop-elect Nguyen spoke of the announcement: "I am humbled to have been asked by the Holy Father to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Toronto as Auxiliary Bishop. To the faithful of the Archdiocese, please pray for me as I embark upon this new ministry as I will pray
for you. I will do all I can to assist Archbishop Collins as we strive to strengthen and nurture the diverse faith community of the Archdiocese."
Bishop-elect McGrattan commented on the Holy Father's appointment: "I am blessed to have served the people of the Diocese of London for the last 22 years. While it will be most difficult to leave the wonderful family I have come to know so well, I eagerly await the opportunity to
meet the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto. Please pray that I will be faithful in this challenging ministry. I hope that as I come to know the priests, deacons and lay leaders, we will be able to share the blessings of pastoral ministry which I experienced in London."
Father Vincent Nguyen was born in Viet Nam in 1966, the sixth in a family of seven boys and two girls. He came to Canada in 1984, entering St. Augustine's Seminary in 1993. Ordained a priest in 1998, he has served in parish ministry in Mississauga and Toronto while also providing pastoral leadership for Vietnamese Catholics in the Archdiocese of Toronto. Father Nguyen traveled to Rome for studies in 2005 and was awarded a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), Rome in 2008. He returned to Toronto and was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Spiritual Affairs in August 2008. In September 2009, he was appointed as Chancellor of Spiritual Affairs and Moderator of the Curia.
Father William McGrattan was born in London, Ontario in 1956, the oldest of two children. He entered St. Peter's Seminary in 1982 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1987, serving in parish ministry in Chatham, Ontario. Father McGrattan studied in Rome and earned his
Licentiate in Fundamental Moral Theology from the Pontificio Universita Gregoriana, Rome in 1992. He returned to London, joining the faculty of St. Peter's Seminary, teaching theology courses and eventually serving as Vice Rector and Dean of Theology. Since 1997, he has served as Rector of St. Peter's Seminary in addition to serving on numerous boards and committees.
