Hanoi Government Goes Back on Word to Catholics

(19 Sept 08 - RV) Protected by police, construction workers moved in unexpectedly on the Apostolic Nunciature in Hanoi, Vietnam at dawn this morning, to begin demolition work and turn the building and its surrounding grounds into a public library and park.
The site has been at the centre of an 8 month land dispute between the parishioners of Thai Ha Parish, the original owners of the land, and the local Hanoi Government who forcibly took over all church buildings in the area in 1954 with the rise to power of the Communist party.
